How to connect PA speakers to a mixer

  1. Ensure all your equipment, such as the mixer and speakers, is powered off before connecting them.

  2. Locate the 'main-out' or 'speaker-out' or 'main mix out' on your mixing desk. Choose speaker cables of appropriate lengths to connect your speakers to your desk.

  3. Connect your mixer's main output to your power amplifier's input using balanced cables (usually XLR or TRS cables).

  4. If you have passive speakers, connect those to your power amplifier (connect the power amplifier's output to the inputs at the back of each speaker). If you have active PA speakers, you should be able to connect these directly to your mixing desk using XLR cables.

  5. If you have a passive system, ensure that your speaker's impedance (ohms) matches the minimum impedance that your amplifier can handle.

  6. Once everything is connected, turn on the power of your mixer, power amplifier (if necessary), and PA speakers. Always start with your mixer's volume levels set at zero.

  7. Test the audio by playing something through the mixer and gradually increase the volume to check it is coming through the speakers. Don’t turn it up too loud, as you may overload the system.

  8. Use the balance, equaliser and other settings to adjust the sound to your liking and then monitor and adjust the sound during use to adapt the sound profile to the venue.

  9. Once done, bring down the levels of your mixing desk to zero again before powering everything off.

Following this general guidance, you should connect your mixer to your speakers easily. However, always follow any model-specific instructions for your unique mixer.
