What is a passive subwoofer?

Like active subwoofers, passive subwoofers reproduce low frequencies or bass. Whereas a standard speaker can handle frequencies up to around 20Hz, a subwoofer easily reproduces frequencies around 30 to 150Hz.

Like passive PA Speakers, passive subwoofers must be powered by an external amplifier, whereas active subwoofers have an amplifier built into their speaker unit.

Active vs passive subwoofer

Active subwoofers are more convenient than passive subwoofers because their amplifier is built inside, so they don't need to be powered by an external amplifier. However, this can become inconvenient if your active subwoofer's amp needs repairing, as the whole unit must go away to be repaired. With a passive subwoofer, as your amp and subwoofer are separate, they are much easier to fix, and your subwoofer can easily be switched for another should it need some repairs.

Take care with your passive subwoofer, as your amplifier must match it for power to produce the best sound quality. If you need assistance finding the right subwoofer or choosing between an active or passive subwoofer, please feel free to contact us for further advice.
